Seats, door panels and other surfaces face significantly more daily contact than most clothing or upholstery. Bentley and British textile maker Fox Brothers have nevertheless developed a material designed to meet those demands while retaining the softness and appearance associated with premium wool.

A New Use for Merino Wool

The new fabric is made entirely from merino wool and is being presented as the first 100% wool automotive fabric developed by Bentley and Fox Brothers. It is also described as the first automotive wool fabric certified under the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS).

The choice reflects Bentley’s effort to use more renewable and responsibly sourced materials without making the interior look or feel less luxurious. Wool is a naturally renewable material, and merino wool is already widely associated with high-end clothing because of its texture and comfort.

Adapting it for a vehicle, however, requires overcoming the durability challenges created by regular use. Bentley has worked with Fox Brothers, a Somerset-based textile manufacturer with roots dating back to the 18th century, to develop a fabric suitable for an automotive environment.

Bentley Has Not Revealed the Full Interior

It is not yet clear exactly how extensively the merino wool will be used inside the Torcal. Bentley’s teaser images show the material on at least one door panel, but the company has not yet confirmed whether it will also be used on the seats.

That decision could be particularly significant because seats experience some of the highest levels of repeated contact and abrasion inside a vehicle. The final interior specification is expected to become clearer when Bentley provides a more complete look at the Torcal.

The gradual reveal also gives Bentley an opportunity to showcase individual materials and craftsmanship before the electric SUV is fully unveiled.

Recycled Materials Join the Sustainable Interior

Merino wool is not the only sustainable material Bentley is developing for the Torcal. The company has also created a wood-effect finish called Ombre Veneer, which uses sustainably sourced walnut trimmings combined with recycled paper.

The material is produced by compressing as many as 1,000 individually selected layers before cutting the finished material into sheets less than one millimeter thick. The process gives Bentley another way to incorporate recycled and reclaimed materials while maintaining the visual character expected from a luxury vehicle interior.

For a manufacturer known for highly crafted cabins, the approach represents a broader interpretation of sustainability. Rather than focusing solely on the vehicle’s electric powertrain, Bentley is applying the concept to the materials that passengers see and touch every day.

Sustainable Materials Meet Bentley’s Luxury Tradition

The Torcal will combine Bentley’s traditional focus on craftsmanship with electric propulsion and a different approach to interior materials. The company is attempting to preserve the sense of exclusivity associated with its vehicles while changing how some of the materials inside them are sourced and manufactured.

The use of merino wool is particularly notable because it brings a material more commonly associated with premium clothing into an environment where durability is essential. Its success in the Torcal will depend on how effectively Bentley and Fox Brothers have adapted the fabric to withstand everyday automotive use.

As Bentley continues to reveal the electric SUV, the merino wool and Ombre Veneer provide an early indication of how the company intends to define sustainable luxury. Rather than treating responsible materials as a compromise, the Torcal is being developed around the idea that sustainability and high-end craftsmanship can coexist within the same cabin.

Bentley is demonstrating that sustainable materials do not have to compromise luxury with the upcoming Torcal, an electric SUV that will feature a 100% merino wool fabric developed specifically for automotive use.
