The next-generation BMW i7 will take a leap in range and charging
BMW has taken a key strategic step in developing its next luxury electric sedan: the new i7 will feature next-generation batteries supplied by Rimac Technology, a specialist in high-performance electric systems.
This move reinforces the German automaker’s commitment to leading the premium electric segment, incorporating innovations that promise greater range, improved energy density, and faster charging times.
Neue Klasse platform: BMW’s electric future
The new i7 will be built on the innovative Neue Klasse platform, designed specifically for electric vehicles. Unlike the current model—based on an adapted architecture—this new foundation will enable advanced technologies such as:
- Fully software-defined architecture
- Centralized “Heart of Joy” computing system
- New battery and electric powertrain solutions
Thanks to this platform, the i7 will be able to compete directly with the most advanced models on the market, positioning itself as a benchmark in the segment.
If you’re closely following the evolution of high-end electric vehicles, you can also explore current market options through this electric and luxury car marketplace, where models with similar technologies are already available.
Batteries developed between Germany and Croatia
The new batteries will be based on BMW’s Gen5 modular technology, combined with Gen6 cylindrical lithium-ion cells (4695 format). According to Rimac, this combination will deliver significant improvements in performance and energy efficiency.
The production process will be international:
- Cell manufacturing in Zagreb (Croatia)
- Final assembly at BMW’s plant in Dingolfing (Germany)
This German facility will be the only site producing the new i7 within the Neue Klasse lineup.
Why Rimac?
BMW didn’t choose Rimac by chance. Unlike giants such as CATL or BYD, Rimac Technology specializes in high-voltage electric systems for high-performance vehicles, including hypercars.
The company already collaborates with prestigious brands, supplying batteries for models such as:
- Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid
- Bugatti Tourbillon
This makes Rimac an ideal partner for a flagship model like the i7.
Direct competition with Mercedes-Benz
The future BMW i7 will go head-to-head with the upcoming electric Mercedes-Benz S-Class, expected to launch later this decade. Both models will compete to dominate the luxury electric sedan segment, where range, efficiency, and technology will make the difference.
Official debut in Beijing
BMW has confirmed that the new i7 will be unveiled on April 22 at the Beijing Auto Show, where all technical and design details will be revealed.
