A senior executive from General Motors has confirmed that the Chevrolet Silverado EV is set to debut in 2023, with production kicking off in early that year. This timing, reported by Automotive News, is earlier than the previously suggested late 2023 schedule.
The Silverado EV, or Silverado E as it has been referred to, is positioned for arrival after several other key electric trucks have already been launched, including the Ford F-150 Lightning set to arrive in May and, to some extent, the Rivian R1T, which is just starting to reach customers.
GM has claimed that the Silverado EV will offer up to 400 miles of range, positioning it as a traditional-looking counterpart to the radically different Tesla Cybertruck, which is due for an update and delivery sometime next year. While it won’t be GM’s first electric pickup truck, it will be different from and more affordable than the GMC Hummer EV. The Hummer EV, set to be released by the end of the year, will cost $112,595 for the Edition 1, with an estimated range of 329 miles. The Silverado EV will follow the dedicated electric structural sandwich approach used for the GMC Hummer EV but will focus on affordability that fleet customers can bear.
GM has already teased features for the Silverado EV, including a glass roof and a four-wheel steering system described more as an aid to steering and maneuverability rather than the off-road-focused Crab mode of the Hummer EV. The Silverado electric will make its official debut at the CES in Las Vegas on January 5th.
