Electric vehicle manufacturers continue searching for new ways to solve one of the biggest challenges facing EVs: creating an emotional driving experience. Without the distinctive roar of a combustion engine, many automakers have experimented with synthetic engine sounds, amplified electric motor noise, and even audio designed by famous composers.
Bentley, however, has taken a completely different approach for its upcoming Torcal electric SUV. Rather than simulating an engine, the British luxury brand has commissioned a full orchestra to create a unique soundscape inspired by the character of its legendary V8 engines.
A Soundtrack Inspired by Bentley’s Heritage
The new audio experience, known as Bentley Dynamic Symphony, has been developed to enhance the driving experience while avoiding conventional artificial engine sounds.
Bentley’s goal is to preserve some of the personality that has defined its V8-powered models for decades while adapting that emotional connection to the era of electric mobility.
To achieve this, the company’s engineers recorded one of Bentley’s classic V8 engines in a professional studio and carefully analyzed every detail of its sound. Their research revealed that the engine’s appeal comes not only from its mechanical tone but also from its rhythm and subtle imperfections, which give it a distinctly human quality.
Professional Musicians Instead of Artificial Engine Noise
Based on that analysis, Bentley collaborated with professional musicians to compose a soundtrack capable of delivering the same emotional impact.
Percussion plays the leading role by recreating the cadence of a traditional V8 engine, while instruments such as double basses and violas add richness and depth to the overall composition. Rather than convincing drivers they are listening to a gasoline engine, the soundtrack creates an entirely new listening experience inspired by Bentley’s engineering heritage.
The orchestra drew inspiration from some of the brand’s most iconic powerplants, including the famous 6¾-liter V8 and the legendary supercharged V8 engines of the 1930s, both regarded as milestones in Bentley’s history.
The system will also respond dynamically to throttle inputs, acceleration, braking, and other driving actions, providing a soundtrack that evolves naturally with the driver’s behavior.
A Key Model for Bentley’s Electric Future
The Bentley Torcal is expected to play a major role in the company’s transition toward electrification. As the electric successor to the highly successful Bentayga, Bentley aims to combine luxury, cutting-edge technology, and driving emotion in a single premium SUV.

A Different Approach to Electric Vehicle Sound
While many automakers rely on simulated engine noise or futuristic science-fiction-inspired effects, Bentley’s orchestral approach offers something genuinely original.
By using real musicians instead of digital sound effects, the company has created a soundtrack with its own identity—one that captures emotion without pretending to be a traditional combustion engine. If the final production version delivers on its promise, the Bentley Torcal could set a new benchmark for bringing character and personality to the next generation of electric vehicles.
