An important consideration when buying an electric vehicle is where to charge it. While most owners will charge at home most of the time, some longer trips will require connecting to a public fast charger.

Unlike gas stations, which are relatively uniform in the types of fuel they offer and how quickly you can refuel, the charging speed (and plug types) offered at public DC charging points varies widely.

One thing to note is the difference between AC and DC charging. AC charging is what is used to charge an electric car at home and is significantly slower than DC charging.

Electric vehicles come with an onboard charger that converts AC power to DC, usually at speeds below 20 kW. DC chargers bypass this integrated converter by supplying DC directly, allowing much faster charging speeds of 50 kW and higher.

Interenergy Systems Dominicana, part of the InterEnergy Group, leads electric mobility in the country through its technological platform Evergo, which currently has around 150 charging stations available in key locations nationwide. The plan is to increase this number to 500 by December 2021.

To date, the following companies have joined the Evergo network: CCN and its Mega and Supermercados Nacional branches, Ágora Mall, La Sirena, McDonald’s, Burger King, Texaco, Plaza Lama, and San Juan Shopping Center. Additionally, the Punta Cana shopping center of ABS Food Group, the Cap Cana center, the Grupo Punta Cana center, La Tiendita, Consorcio Energético Punta Cana, Macau from Bayahíbe Power Company of the National Energy Company (CEPM), and its subsidiary Bayaíbe.

As these brands and many others join the network in the coming months, the country has given unprecedented momentum to electric mobility to fulfill its shared commitment to environmental protection.
