The electric vehicle market in China is experiencing a historic moment. A new model has entered the scene with remarkable force, reshaping the competitive landscape among major manufacturers. The Geely Xingyuan, an affordable electric hatchback, is now directly competing with bestsellers such as the BYD Seagull and the Tesla Model Y.

In just 14 months since its launch, Geely has sold more than half a million units, positioning the Xingyuan as one of the best-selling electric cars in the world and a strong contender to finish the year as China’s top-selling EV.

Explosive sales growth

Geely Auto—sister brand to Volvo, Polestar, and Zeekr under the Geely Group—introduced the Xingyuan in October 2024. Since then, its rise has been nothing short of extraordinary.
In the first half of the year alone, the model outsold both the BYD Seagull and the Tesla Model Y, surpassing 200,000 units sold.

Between January and November, sales reached nearly 430,000 units, making it the best-selling electric vehicle in China during that period—an achievement that has caught the attention of the entire industry.

Affordable pricing with exceptional value

One of the Xingyuan’s strongest selling points is its highly competitive price. The 2026 model starts at around $9,700, while the top-tier version remains below $12,340, placing it in the same price range as its main rival, the Seagull.

For that price, buyers get a surprisingly rich package:

 • High-quality interior materials

 • Advanced software features

 • More interior space than direct competitors

This value proposition is also reflected in the growing interest in electric vehicle buying and selling platforms such as electric car marketplaces and used EV listings, where consumers increasingly compare models and prices before making a purchase.

Modern platform and efficient battery options

The Xingyuan is built on Geely’s SEA-E (Sustainable Experience Architecture-Entry) platform, specifically designed for affordable electric vehicles. It is available with two CATL LFP battery options:

 • 30 kWh, offering up to 310 km (CLTC) of range

 • 40 kWh, delivering up to 410 km (CLTC)

While the Chinese CLTC cycle is more optimistic than Western standards, China’s vast **charging infrastructure—the largest in the world—**significantly reduces range anxiety.

A chassis that sets it apart

Another key advantage over rivals lies in its technical setup. The Geely Xingyuan features:

 • Rear-wheel drive

 • Independent rear suspension

This combination is rare in the affordable EV segment. By contrast, the BYD Seagull uses front-wheel drive and a simpler rear suspension, resulting in a less refined driving experience.

Surprising technology and interior space

Inside, the Xingyuan borrows the Flyme Auto infotainment system from much more expensive Geely models. Highlights include:

 • 14.1-inch central touchscreen

 • 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster

 • 375-liter rear trunk, plus a 70-liter front trunk

Combined, this cargo capacity exceeds that of a Volkswagen Golf, despite the Xingyuan being a smaller vehicle.

On track to become the year’s best-selling EV?

While Geely has made a few cost-saving compromises—such as the absence of a rear wiper or automatic climate control—the overall package remains extremely compelling.

With over 500,000 units sold in just over a year and ranking as the third best-selling electric car globally in the first three quarters, the Geely Xingyuan is aiming high.
If current sales momentum continues, it could end the year as China’s best-selling electric vehicle and even overtake the Tesla Model 3 worldwide.

A clear sign that the future of electric mobility is increasingly being shaped by China and its emerging automakers.
