The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV, unveiled during the Final Four, aims to be the ultimate off-roader but faces tough competition from the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. Both competitors are smaller, much more affordable, and, crucially, already available.
The SUV version of the GMC Hummer EV shares a similar spec sheet with the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup truck but will be smaller, potentially offering more off-road capability.
The Hummer SUV will boast up to 830 hp, sent to all four wheels through a choice of two or three electric motors. It’s capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds and offers over 400 km of range. GMC will market it in five models, two of which are six-figure offerings (USD).
The real difference between the Hummer EV SUV and the pickup truck is the size, impacting off-road and on-road capabilities and the SUV’s driving dynamics.
While the front of the SUV Hummer EV resembles the truck, a side view reveals a more compact appearance. A full-size spare tire is mounted on the rear door, and the three-quarter rear view gives strong vibes of the Hummer H3. The truck’s large front trunk, sliding rear window, front roof panel, and T-shaped second-row caps will be standard.
The Hummer EV SUV will have a five-passenger capacity, featuring a 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster dominating the dashboard. Like the truck, the touchscreen will utilize the UnReal Engine, a popular video game program, to display 3D graphics.
The Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 will arrive in spring 2023 and cost $105,595. A 20-module Ultium lithium-ion battery pack will power the three electric motors. It will have an 800-volt electrical architecture with fast-charging capability at speeds of up to 300 kW. Edition 1 models will have the full 830 hp and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. Standard features include side steps, floor liners, and 22-inch wheels.
The Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 with the Extreme Off-Road package will arrive simultaneously with the same powertrain, but slightly less range. However, the price will increase by around $10,000. Off-road equipment includes 18-inch wheels, 35-inch mud-terrain tires, underbody armor, and rock sliders.
The Hummer EV3X SUV will cost $99,995 and follow the Edition 1 with deliveries scheduled for spring 2023. It will have the same powertrain and specs as the Edition 1 models, with the Extreme Off-Road package available.
The base model will be known as the Hummer EV2 SUV but won’t arrive until spring 2024 with a starting price of $79,995. A 16-module Ultium battery pack will power two electric motors to deliver over 400 km of range and up to 625 hp. An 800-volt architecture with the 20-module Ultium battery pack and over 480 km of range will be optional.
Like the Hummer EV truck, the SUVs will be available with the CrabWalk feature, using the four-wheel steering system to move sideways to tackle challenging obstacles and maneuver in tough situations. The Extract mode, which can raise the ride height to 15.9 inches from the standard 9.9 inches, will also be available, and GMC will offer the Super Cruise hands-free driver-assist system.
GM will release more information about the 2024 GMC Hummer EV as the on-sale date approaches.
