GMC, the truck brand of General Motors, has provided a first look at the all-electric version of its full-size Sierra truck, with a full design reveal scheduled for 2022 and an expected market arrival in 2023.

The GMC Sierra Electric will share its “Ultium” structural underpinnings derived from the Hummer EV with the Chevrolet Silverado EV. However, GMC is hinting that its version might not be an “affordable, fleet-focused high-volume entry,” as CEO Mary Barra described the Silverado EV earlier this year.

The Sierra Electric will launch exclusively in the luxurious Denali trim.

“We now have the opportunity to evolve Sierra’s capabilities and technologies, as enabled by the transition to all-electric propulsion, while simultaneously elevating the luxurious design and comfort associated with Denali,” said Duncan Aldred, GMC vice president.

In a previous teaser video, GMC showcased a different front end and distinctive lighting for the electric truck, with a look that closely resembles the design themes and details used in the Hummer EV. Chevy has already introduced a glass roof and four-wheel steering for the Silverado EV, set to be showcased at CES in January. It has also touted a 400-mile range for some versions; although the Sierra EV might accumulate more luxury features, it is likely to approach that number.

The exact timing has yet to be confirmed, but GMC provides some clues. It states that the Sierra Electric will be GMC’s third electric vehicle, following the 2022 Hummer EV pickup and the 2024 Hummer EV SUV. While the pickup is entering production now, the SUV is expected to be in production early in 2023, potentially putting the Sierra into production by mid-2023, right behind the early 2023 timeline of the Silverado Electric.

The Sierra Electric will be manufactured at GM’s Factory Zero assembly plant in Hamtramck, Michigan.
