Those lucky enough to snag a 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat received a surprise in April: the monstrous SUV became less rare.
When the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat was announced in July 2020, the automaker stated that it would only produce the supercharged SUV for about six months. That timeframe allowed for the construction of only 2,000 units, according to Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis. But things have changed.
In April, Dodge Garage, a shop owned by Stellantis, revealed that Dodge will increase production of the 2021 Durango SRT Hellcat and manufacture more than the originally planned 2,000 units.
A Stellantis spokesperson confirmed that the automaker will now produce 3,000 units of the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcats, as first reported by Muscle Cars & Trucks.
“Whenever you launch a limited production vehicle and plan to make fewer units than the number of Dodge dealerships nationwide, you run the risk of leaving a lot of customers very unhappy. When we finalized the production plan for this incredible SUV, we found a way to move some 6.2-liter Hemi Hellcat V-8 engines from other vehicles to ensure all ‘sold orders’ are built in our systems. We didn’t want to disappoint these customers and wanted to find a way to make sure they are part of the Brotherhood of Muscle,” said Bob Broderdorf, Director of Dodge Brand, to Dodge Garage.
Dodge’s plan in April was to fulfill remaining orders, but now that has changed. A Stellantis spokesperson stated that the additional 1,000 units will fulfill sold orders in the system and allow customers to place orders today if they wish.
The next batch of Durango Hellcats will roar down the assembly line in June, and the three-row Hellcat will go down in history when Durango production begins in 2022 later this summer.
It took only two months after order books opened for the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat to sell out despite its $82,490 price tag.
As a reminder, the Durango Hellcat is powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 that produces 710 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque. It can do 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and has an NHRA-certified quarter-mile time of 11.5 seconds at 118 mph on its way to a top speed of 180 mph. It can also tow up to 8,700 lbs.
Despite the production increase, the Durango SRT Hellcat will remain rarer than the Demon, but only just, as only 3,300 units were produced.
