Stellantis is initiating a recall for the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid SUVs, affecting 12,458 potentially impacted vehicles in the United States. The recall addresses software issues that could result in a loss of communication between the transmission control module and hybrid control processors, leading to engine shutdown while driving, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The software-related problem poses a risk of engine shutdown due to a breakdown in communication between the transmission control module and hybrid control processors. Although Stellantis reported no knowledge of accidents or injuries related to this issue, the company acknowledged seven customer assistance requests, 10 warranty claims, and six field reports documenting the condition.
To address this issue, dealerships will install a complimentary software update. The updated software has been in production since November 19, 2022. All 2022 Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids manufactured before this date are included in the recall.
Previous Recalls and Industry Context:
This marks the first recall for the Grand Cherokee 4xe since its debut as a 2022 model. The Wrangler 4xe, utilizing a similar plug-in hybrid propulsion system aimed at maximizing off-road capability, was previously recalled for potential engine stops. Announced in November 2022, that recall affected 62,909 vehicles from model years 2021-2023.
Jeep’s 4xe models have proven popular among consumers, with the Wrangler 4xe being a top-seller among plug-in hybrids. The recent price reduction for the Wrangler 4xe, part of the 2024 model year update for the Wrangler lineup, reflects the brand’s commitment to maintaining its appeal in the plug-in hybrid market. Additionally, Jeep’s decision to cease stocking non-hybrid vehicles in California emission states positions the 4xe models as the sole option for many customers seeking a Grand Cherokee or Wrangler, unless opting for a custom order.
Conclusion:
While Stellantis works to address the software-related issue swiftly and comprehensively, the recall emphasizes the growing importance of stringent quality control measures in the automotive industry, particularly as hybrid and electric vehicles become more prevalent. The popularity of Jeep’s 4xe models underscores the significance of resolving such issues promptly to maintain consumer trust and confidence in the burgeoning plug-in hybrid market.
