Kia is recalling certain Niro hybrid and plug-in hybrid models due to a problem that could cause engine compartment fires.
The recall covers 121,411 vehicles, including Niro Hybrid models from 2017 to 2022 and Niro Plug-In Hybrid models from 2018 to 2022, according to recall documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Kia also manufactured a fully electric version of this Niro generation, a small number of which were recalled in late 2022 for a power system defect, but the issue addressed in this recall is specific to vehicles with internal combustion engines.
In the affected vehicles, fluid may leak onto a printed circuit board in the hydraulic actuator clutch, causing a short circuit and potentially a fire in the engine compartment.
To remedy this issue, dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the hydraulic actuator clutch, in addition to installing a new fuse, at no cost.
Kia informed the NHTSA that it is not aware of any accidents, injuries, or deaths related to this problem. Recall documents state that the automaker became aware of the issue after a customer complaint about a warning light illuminated on the dashboard and difficulties starting a 2020 Niro Hybrid model. The affected population was then determined through production records and suppliers.
The current recall does not affect the 2023 model year Kia Niro. Like the previous generation, first introduced in 2017, the 2023 Niro is offered in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric configurations. All three models feature a more modern style and improved efficiency compared to their predecessors. However, price increases compared to the previous generation models make their value more volatile.
