The Lucid Gravity, the electric SUV sequel to the luxury sedan Air by the automaker, is set to be unveiled in November and commence production by late 2024.
This confirmation, aligning with Lucid’s previously discussed timeline, was announced on Monday during the release of the financial results for the second quarter of 2023. Lucid reported delivering 1,404 vehicles in the second quarter and claimed to be on track to manufacture 10,000 vehicles this year.
Initially showcased as the Project Gravity prototype in 2020, with further glimpses of a more production-ready version in November last year and earlier this year, the Gravity is expected to share an emphasis on aerodynamics with the Air but with a taller SUV-like body, according to the SUV Design Brief.
As confirmed by Lucid last fall, the Gravity will feature next-generation high-resolution Glass Cockpit displays and the automaker’s next-generation software-based user interface.
Expect availability of dual-motor and tri-motor configurations, the latter featuring two rear motors. There’s also the possibility of a single-motor rear-wheel-drive version. Lucid has stated that the Gravity will be offered in two- or three-row configurations, accommodating five, six, or seven passengers.
Based on previous statements by Lucid, the Gravity could be the electric SUV range-topper, with EPA ratings that may only be surpassed by the Air Grand Touring’s 516-mile range. Similar to the Air, the impressive range is likely to be combined with an advantage in miles regained from fast charging on road trips, nearing the sedan’s 300 miles in 20 minutes, thanks to its emphasis on efficiency and proprietary propulsion suite.
In the second quarter, Lucid also initiated “vehicle material shipments” to Saudi Arabia. In 2022, the country’s government agreed to purchase up to 100,000 Lucid electric vehicles over a 10-year period, and Lucid plans a Saudi Arabian plant that will commence electric vehicle production in 2025. The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia played a crucial role in providing Lucid with the necessary capital to cross the finish line in vehicle development and commence manufacturing. Reportedly, as of 2022, the fund owned approximately 62% of Lucid.
With the new Saudi plant yet to open, Gravity production will start at Lucid’s current assembly plant in Casa Grande, Arizona.
