Lucid revealed additional details on Tuesday about its upcoming electric SUV, the Gravity, promising to shake up the world of electric SUVs just as it has with its high-range and efficient Air sedan.
Built on the same platform and foundations as the Air, the Gravity will have a taller form but, according to Lucid, the SUV will offer “more range than any other EV on the market, surpassing its stablemate, Lucid Air.”
Currently, the Lucid Air boasts a range of up to 516 miles according to the EPA in its Grand Touring version. Even the base Pure and mid-range Touring versions reach 425 miles and 410 miles, respectively, with a dual-motor setup.
In 2020, Lucid teased Project Gravity, a drivable vehicle concept that previewed the SUV’s design direction. At that time, Lucid’s VP of Design, Derek Jenkins, told Green Car Reports that the design was still a work in progress, with the team aiming to strike the right balance between a high driving position, cargo and passenger space while maintaining aerodynamic optimization at speed.
Lucid promises that the Gravity will feature next-generation Glass Cockpit displays, a new generation of its interface, and “an unprecedented combination of supercar performance and seating for up to seven adults.”
“It is both a supercar in disguise and an SUV with flexible passenger and cargo space that seems incredibly large in relation to the vehicle’s exterior size,” stated Vice President of Design Derek Jenkins in a press release.
The Gravity will be available in two or three-row configurations, offering seating for five, six, or seven. Based on the size of the Air, the Gravity is expected to closely compete with the Tesla Model X, which is available in configurations for five, six, or seven passengers, with a starting price of $122,190 for the dual-motor standard version with a claimed range of 351 miles and 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds. The tri-motor Model X Plaid has a range rating of 333 miles and a claimed 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds, priced at $140,190.
Reservations for the Gravity will open in early 2023 for the U.S. and Canada, and the announcement confirms that the final design will be revealed at that time. Meanwhile, the company states that it is currently “finalizing the design and specifications of the vehicle.”
Lucid says that production of the Gravity is set to begin in 2024 at its Arizona factory.
