Mitsubishi Outlander 2023

The redesigned 2023 Outlander plug-in hybrid is Mitsubishi’s most important vehicle, showcasing the brand’s potential for advancement in the transition from combustion to electrification. The three-row SUV, with improved propulsion and premium features, signals Mitsubishi’s commitment to viability and desirability in the future. Mark Chaffin, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America, sees the Outlander PHEV as a paradigm shift, representing the gateway to electrification.

Originally launched in 2013, the Outlander PHEV has surpassed 300,000 global sales, making it the best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV worldwide. The second-generation PHEV now accommodates seven passengers with a third-row seat, a larger battery pack (20 kWh), and more powerful motors, aiming to offer an SUV experience closer to an electric vehicle. The new model, sharing the platform with the redesigned gasoline Outlander, demonstrates versatility, with a longer wheelbase, wider body, and increased height.

Key improvements include a 54% increase in battery capacity, extending electric range from 24 to 38 miles. The PHEV operates more frequently in electric mode with an 85 kW front motor and a 100 kW rear motor. The performance is enhanced, with smoother transitions between gas and electric modes. With a total system output of 248 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, the PHEV is more responsive, delivering a driving experience that outshines its predecessor and rivals. The seven driving modes and six brake regeneration levels allow for customization to optimize driving.

The PHEV’s handling has matured, demonstrating improved stability and composure. The increased ground clearance and larger tires contribute to better ride quality. The steering has also been enhanced for improved center stability and responsiveness.

The interior space is flexible, offering a 40/20/40 split-folding second-row seat and a more spacious cargo area. The third-row seat is suitable for occasional use and can accommodate small passengers. The larger fuel tank (14.8 gallons) contributes to an extended hybrid range of 423 miles.

The top-tier 40th Anniversary Edition introduces luxurious features, such as semi-aniline leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9.0-inch touchscreen, a 10.8-inch head-up display, Bose sound system, wireless smartphone charger, panoramic sunroof, three-zone climate control, and an electric rear door.

Charging capabilities include a CHAdeMO fast charge option, allowing 0-80% charging in 38 minutes with a 50 kW power output. The PHEV can be fully charged in 6.5 hours with a Level 2 charger at 15 amps. Mitsubishi anticipates EPA certification for the 2023 Outlander PHEV with a range of 38 miles and 64 MPGe.
