The first Munich Motor Show will kick off this September with a press day on September 6, and the doors will open to the public the following day.
Officially named IAA Mobility, the Munich Motor Show spans across the city, featuring a traditional car show space as well as exhibits in the city center and even a test track connecting the two main locations.
The car show will host unveilings of various new car models, and you can read about the most significant ones below in our A to Z list of car manufacturers and what they will bring to the fair.
We already know that Audi, BMW, Cupra, Dacia, Ford, Hyundai, Mercedes, MINI, Polestar, Porsche, Renault, Rolls-Royce, smart, and Volkswagen will be present, although only a handful of these automakers have announced what they will be showcasing. Notably, Stellantis brands like Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroen, and Fiat will not be attending the show.
The Munich Motor Show, replacing the traditional Frankfurt Motor Show this year, will be built around the Summit area, a typical car show space with new products and presentations. This is where our reporters will engage with industry leaders and receive our famous scoops and exclusive news.
Then there’s the Blue Lane, a test track that runs from the conference center to the city center, where visitors can test new products such as cars and bicycles, as this car show focuses on all forms of mobility, not just cars.
Next is the Open Space in the city center, where Munich visitors can see new cars and other means of transportation, along with entertainment and other events.
Munich Motor Show 2021: A to Z
Audi
Audi will showcase a trio of ‘Spheres’ concept cars at the car show, including a sports car, a luxury car, and an SUV.
The sports car is called ‘Sky Sphere,’ and a teaser shows a sketch of a car with a long hood and a low roofline. Next is the luxury car called ‘Grand Sphere,’ which was also teased with a drawing of lines showing a model with a long and wide roofline, large wheel arches, and a high shoulder line.
The ‘Urban Sphere’ will complete the lineup, and the sketch here shows an SUV with a side profile almost similar to the Peugeot 5008 with a very flat front.
BMW
BMW is rumored to launch its new luxury sedan, the 7 Series, at this year’s car show, potentially in the form of a concept car. It will demonstrate the transition from combustion power to the future of luxury electric cars on a new platform designed to support that.
Dacia
Economical car manufacturer Dacia will showcase a new seven-seat MPV called the Lodgy at the fair. It has been confirmed to arrive in the UK, even though this model was previously only available in other markets.
It will use the same architecture as the new Sandero and Sandero Stepway but will be larger to accommodate additional passenger seats inside. We expect it to also use the same engines, including a small gasoline engine and likely the Bi-Fuel model equipped with LPG.
Mercedes
Mercedes will unveil eight new cars in Munich, including five pure electric vehicles and a new high-performance hybrid. The most significant debut will be the Mercedes EQE sedan, becoming the first purely electric executive sedan available when it goes on sale in 2022.
Mercedes will also present its first electric AMG model, which we expect to be a 751bhp version of the EQS sedan. Other highlights include a Maybach EQS SUV concept, a new rival to the Audi A4 Allroad in the form of the C-Class All-Terrain, and a new performance hybrid, which could be an AMG 73 version of the 4-door GT or the electrified S-Class we first spotted in 2020.
Renault
Renault has a strong lineup at the Munich fair, starting with the new electric car, Megane E-Tech. It is a fully electric version of the popular family car and will compete with the Volkswagen ID.3.
The Renault 5 electric car prototype we’ve already seen will also appear at the exhibition stand, along with some classic Renault 5 models for comparison. Plug-in hybrid Megane models will also be featured.
Finally, there will be vehicles from the new Mobilize brand that Renault is using to showcase its planned range of urban vehicles, likely named Duo, Bento, Limo, and Hippo. It seems this service will produce a successor to the quirky Twizy, but with a more modern sales policy based on time spent in the car and paid with the smartphone.
Smart
Smart will showcase the beginning of its push towards the upper market and larger vehicle segments in Munich, with the new parent company Geely at the helm. The company will present a new electric SUV concept, abandoning some of the brand’s famous “smallness” for a more premium image. It will transform into a new competitor for the MINI Countryman and the Audi Q2 in 2023, and we know in good faith that the finished car will look like the conceptual sketches. It will be the first car to use the new fully electric SEA car platform developed by Geely.
