Rivian has taken a key step toward the mass production of one of the most anticipated electric vehicles of the coming years. The U.S. company announced that it has already started the first manufacturing validation builds of the Rivian R2 at its plant in Normal, Illinois—a decisive milestone in meeting its ambitious timeline.
This move confirms that the manufacturer is getting closer to starting customer deliveries in the first half of 2026, as the brand has officially reiterated.
What does this phase mean for the Rivian R2?
The so-called Manufacturing Validation Builds (MVB) are pre-production vehicles designed to verify that the factory, equipment, and processes are ready to build the model consistently and at scale.
According to Rivian spokesperson Courtney Richardson, this phase represents moving from the question “Can we build this vehicle?” to “Can we build it correctly, repeatedly, and in volume?”. In other words, it is the final major test before commercial production.
The R2, Rivian’s big bet
The Rivian R2 will be an electric crossover with a starting price of around $45,000, positioning it directly as a rival to the Tesla Model Y. This price point makes it far more accessible than the current R1S and R1T, whose average price exceeds $90,000.
