Recently, the National Police Statistics Department has updated its quarterly report on stolen vehicles for the period 2017-2021, providing records of stolen vehicles in the Dominican Republic.

This informative resource details the relationship of two and four-wheeled vehicles stolen by province, day of the week, time range, or vehicle type. For instance, the province with the highest number of vehicle thefts in 2021 is Santo Domingo, with a total of 40 four-wheeled vehicles stolen compared to 296 two-wheeled vehicles.

The report also reveals that the majority of thefts occur on weekdays (Monday to Friday), while Sundays record the fewest incidents. The time frame with the highest number of thefts is between 6:00 AM and 12:00 PM.

Vehicle theft remains high throughout the national territory, according to these reports from the National Police, covering the audit from January to March of the first semester of 2021.

Among the causes contributing to a higher incidence of this type of crime, we can list:

  1. Owner’s negligence, such as leaving windows down or doors unlocked.
  2. Internet fraud.
  3. Robbery.
  4. Irregular sales.
  5. Security measures.

Security measures include not buying vehicles on the street from unknown sellers or those advertising through dubious channels like the internet or newspapers. Always use reputable platforms in the sector such as yacarros.com and, of course, take appropriate precautions. For more information, you can refer to our frequently asked questions section.

Other security measures mentioned include obtaining certification from the General Directorate of Internal Taxes (DGII) to verify the validity of the data registered in the vehicle’s registration. Additionally, recommendations include not leaving your vehicle in isolated places for extended periods, avoiding leaving valuables inside the vehicle, and being cautious when entrusting keys to informal valet parking attendants. It is also advised to drive with active insurance, closed windows, and avoid dark streets.
