It’s been a while since Porsche ventured into off-road sports cars, but a new variant of the 911 seems ready to scratch that itch.

Unlike the previous prototype, this latest vehicle not only features flared fenders but also wheel arch protectors. Thicker side sills help connect the plastic Safari extensions.

This car has a production-spec bumper with multiple air intakes, as well as a small grille that opens at the base of the hood. Since this vehicle is aimed at those who want to take their 911 on non-paved roads, it’s equipped with a raised suspension setup.

The high-profile tires from previous cars were swapped for units that wouldn’t look out of place on a regular 911.

At the rear, this Safari has a large fixed rear wing and a bumper with two large oval-shaped exhaust tips integrated into the diffuser.

While we don’t know how powerful the turbocharged six-cylinder boxer engine of the Safari will be, it’s safe to assume it will be connected to an all-wheel-drive system.

While the new Safari could be the first of its kind since the 1978 911 SC Safari, Porsche has played with reviving the idea before.

In late 2020, the automaker released a set of photos detailing 15 concepts it had developed but had never before publicly revealed.

Among the highlights were a hybrid race car, a people carrier (yes, seriously!), and a Safari model based on the 991 generation 911.
