The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric vehicle has earned the highest safety rating, Top Safety Pick+, from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
To secure the Top Safety Pick+ designation, the Ioniq 5 achieved top ratings of “Good” in all IIHS crash tests and received a “Superior” rating for front crash prevention technology. The base SE trim’s headlights received an “Acceptable” rating (other trim levels received higher ratings), and the LATCH child seat anchors also received an “Acceptable” rating. Despite these minor considerations, the Ioniq 5 earned the top honor.
The Top Safety Pick+ rating applies to vehicles manufactured after December 2021, as Hyundai made changes to the front seats that could impact headrest evaluations, as noted by the IIHS in a press release. However, it’s essential to mention that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not yet rated the Ioniq 5.
Nevertheless, this safety recognition adds to the positive initial impressions of Hyundai’s first dedicated electric vehicle. In early reviews, the Ioniq 5 has been praised for its overall charm and performance.
This achievement is likely to bode well for the Kia EV6 and the Genesis GV60, which share the same E-GMP platform. While the EV6 is closely related to the Ioniq 5, it has not yet undergone safety ratings.
Hyundai has a strong track record in the safety of its electric vehicles, with even the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle Nexo securing the Top Safety Pick+ rating for 2022, as it did in its inaugural model year.
