Lucid Motors from California has unveiled the first photos of its upcoming electric SUV, the Gravity, currently undergoing testing in camouflaged form on U.S. public roads.
Production for the Gravity is expected to start in 2024, with an official debut, specification details, and reservations opening expected this spring. Lucid promises “an unprecedented combination of space, performance, and range,” enabled by Lucid’s design and propulsion technology.
The initial photos of the development model revealed on Tuesday don’t reveal much more than what Lucid partially disclosed in November last year. They confirm that Lucid plans to keep the front very low with the vehicle quite high, in harmony with an emphasis on aerodynamics. The slim, wide front treatment closely resembles that of the Air. There is more lift on the hood and the Gravity’s hoodline, leading to a higher waistline, which, as seen in the included rear photo, wraps all the way around the vehicle, perhaps with a bit more rounded and less chiseled shape than in the Project Gravity prototype shown a few years ago.
This approach seems to have maintained a high and vertical greenhouse that may help give this vehicle a viable third row despite the aerodynamically sculpted and softened corners and the softened arc of the roofline.
As confirmed by Lucid last fall, Gravity will feature next-generation high-resolution Glass Cockpit displays, as well as the next generation of the brand’s software-based user interface.
Expect Gravity versions to offer two-motor propulsion as well as three-motor propulsion, with two motors at the rear. There may also be single-motor rear-wheel-drive versions. Lucid says Gravity will be offered in two- or three-row configurations, with seating for five, six, or seven.
“Lucid Air redefined the sedan category, and as our technology continues to evolve and lead the market, we are in a place where Gravity is positioned to change the world of SUVs,” said CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson in today’s statement. According to previous statements from Lucid, the Gravity may be the king of the electric SUV range, with EPA ratings that can only be surpassed by the Air Grand Touring with 516 miles.
While several unlikely rivals, including the electric Ram 1500 REV truck, could reach 500 miles of range, Lucid is likely to retain its edge in miles regained with fast charging on road trips, something close to its 300 miles in 20 minutes, thanks to its emphasis on efficiency and the proprietary propulsion suite.
Lucid has confirmed that the Gravity will be built alongside the Air at its factory in Casa Grande, Arizona.
