Bentley has revealed its second plug-in hybrid model: the Flying Spur Hybrid, with a starting price of $160,000 when sales commence later this summer.
Following the Bentayga Hybrid, the latest addition to Bentley’s lineup of large luxury sedans once again combines the power of a six-cylinder engine with a battery and an electric motor. Instead of using the 335bhp 3.0-liter turbo from the Bentayga Hybrid, the Flying Spur is equipped with a more powerful engine: a 2.9-liter turbocharged V6 producing 410 horsepower.
The new engine employs centrally located fuel injectors and spark plugs within each combustion chamber for optimal spray patterns, promoting cleaner and more efficient combustion. Meanwhile, twin-scroll turbos and catalytic converters are placed within the V of the engine to reduce turbo lag and improve emissions.
This advanced gasoline engine works in conjunction with a powerful 134 hp electric motor, resulting in a total of 536 hp and 750 Nm of torque for the Flying Spur Hybrid, a significant increase in thrust over the Bentayga Hybrid’s 443 hp and 770 Nm, reflected in its performance. 0-62 mph takes just 4.1 seconds, and the top speed is 177 mph.
The small electric motor is packaged between the engine and the transmission and is powered by a 14.1 kWh battery. Although fuel consumption or CO2 figures have not been revealed, Bentley claims that the Flying Spur Hybrid has the most “environmentally focused” powertrain in the brand’s lineup. The company states that approximately 24 miles of emissions-free electric range is possible, pending final certification.
The Flying Spur comes equipped with three driving modes: E-Mode, for full electric driving, Hybrid mode, and Hold mode, to save battery charge.
Design changes shared with other Flying Spurs are minimal, with the only adjustments being the ‘Hybrid’ badge, quad oval exhaust tips, and the addition of a charging point on the left rear wing. There is also the option for seven specially chosen Bentley paint colors for the plug-in hybrid model, and buyers can add a free Bentley-branded wall box to keep the plug-in hybrid’s batteries charged at home.
Thanks to a new integrated SIM card in the car, the Flying Spur Hybrid now allows owners to use the My Bentley smartphone app to monitor recent trips, helping them analyze average speed, fuel consumption, and electric range. The same app also enables remote charging initiation if the car is plugged in and allows owners to precondition the cabin temperature before their journey.
