Stellantis, the parent company of Ram, hinted at the possibility of including battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell vans in the upcoming commercial vehicle lineup. The unveiling took place as part of a broader electric propulsion system introduction for commercial vans across Stellantis brands in the European market, including Citroën, Fiat, Opel, Vauxhall, and Peugeot. While details about the future Ram vans remain undisclosed, Stellantis suggested that hydrogen fuel cells could be on the horizon, alongside a previously confirmed electric vehicle.

Stellantis is set to introduce a Ram ProMaster EV in 2024, with plans for the future portfolio to incorporate hydrogen fuel cell technology. The specifics of these developments are likely to emerge as the launch date approaches. Ram vans are expected to continue drawing from European market models (the current ProMaster is a rebadged Fiat Ducato), allowing them to leverage the zero-emission propulsion systems outlined in Monday’s announcement.

Stellantis unveiled that a second-generation fuel cell powertrain, slated for a 2024 release, will offer a range of 249 miles for midsize vans and 311 miles for large vans (likely measured by the more optimistic European WLTP testing cycle). Midsize vans will also be available with 50 kWh or 75 kWh battery packs providing up to 224 miles of range, while large vans will get a 110 kWh pack offering 261 miles. The 150 kW DC fast charging capability can charge the larger pack from 0% to 80% in under an hour, according to Stellantis.

When Stellantis introduced the Ram ProMaster EV in 2022, it emphasized a focus on last-mile delivery operations. However, the expanded range of propulsion systems suggests the potential for a broader spectrum of use cases. Ram’s competitors have already entered the North American electric van market with offerings like the Ford E-Transit and General Motors’ new BrightDrop brand, though the latter has faced production challenges.

In a recent announcement, Stellantis revealed plans for four electrified trucks heading to the U.S. market within the next two years, including “a new hydrogen solution” that could potentially share drivetrain components with the hinted fuel cell van.

The first electrified Ram model will be the 2025 Ram 1500 REV, scheduled for launch next year. The full-size pickup will be offered in both a fully electric version and an extended-range XR version, with fleet versions of both drivetrains in the pipeline.
