RM Sotheby’s auction house has confirmed that the Corvette driven by Cunningham and William Kimberly in the 1960 “24 Hours of Le Mans,” previously thought lost, will be auctioned on May 22 at an event in Amelia Island, Florida. The car is offered without reserve and is expected to fetch over $1 million.
The car, bearing chassis no. 00867S103535, crashed on lap 32 of the Le Mans race, never finishing. The team, led by Cunningham, entered three Corvettes, with no. 3 driven by John Fitch and Bob Grossman being the most successful, winning its class.
The vehicle remained missing for decades until it was finally discovered in 2012, stored in St. Petersburg, Florida. As is often the case with such finds, there was some dispute over who the actual owner was, though it seems to have been resolved.
Other impressive cars that will be up for sale include a 1929 Duesenberg Model J, a 1930 Cadillac V-16, a 1948 Talbot-Lago T26, and a 1981 March 811 Formula 1 racing car.
