Although the latest Volkswagen Golf has been the Golf R with all-wheel drive, the top-tier GTI has been the Clubsport variant. It offers almost as much power as the R but without the electric rear wheels. The latest Clubsport was introduced last year, and this year sees the Clubsport 45, an even more special version to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the hot hatch.

Externally, the Clubsport 45 closely resembles the standard model. It features larger air intakes and a prominent rear spoiler for additional aerodynamic load compared to a regular GTI. However, the 45 comes with unique 19-inch black wheels with red stripes, along with a hexagonal pattern stripe and 45 decals on the sides. The interior also sports a 45 badge on the steering wheel.

The engine remains unchanged from the regular Clubsport, packing 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Power still goes through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic to an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. However, the Clubsport 45 comes standard with the “Race” package, which adds a sports exhaust and removes the maximum speed limiter.

Unfortunately, the Clubsport 45 is exclusive to Europe, and only 5,000 units will be built. Its base price in Germany is 47,790 euros (just over $57,000), roughly 2,500 euros less than a Golf R in the same country.
