Wireless charging technology provider WiTricity argues that its technology can boost electric vehicle (EV) sales. According to a study commissioned by WiTricity, the availability of wireless charging could increase the intent to purchase electric vehicles. Those considering EVs without having committed indicated that their purchase intent increased from 35% to 59% with the option of wireless charging. Among those already planning to buy EVs, the likelihood of doing so in the next 18 months increased from 60% to 84% with the option of wireless charging.
The study also found that general interest in wireless charging is high, with 81% of respondents showing “extremely high” interest in the technology. Additionally, 63% expressed a desire to see wireless charging at public charging stations.
It is important to note that the study was commissioned by WiTricity, a company interested in the widespread adoption of wireless charging for EVs. Wireless charging technology has been anticipated for some time, and models like the Genesis GV60 and BMW 5 Series have explored its implementation. While interest is high, the cost of installing wireless charging hardware and the need to incorporate the technology into more vehicles remain significant challenges.
