Electric bicycles carrying the names of major automakers have become increasingly common, but Volkswagen is taking a different approach. Instead of focusing primarily on speed or range, the company has introduced an eBike designed around one key priority: rider safety.
Developed in partnership with n+, the manufacturer behind electric bikes for Mercedes-AMG F1 and Petronas, Volkswagen’s latest model incorporates an impressive suite of safety technologies rarely seen together on an e-bike.
Advanced safety technology takes center stage
One of the standout features is a rear-view camera mounted on the back fender. Rather than forcing riders to turn their heads to check traffic behind them, the camera streams live video to a display mounted on the handlebars, providing a clear, wide-angle view of approaching vehicles.
The system is complemented by radar-based blind-spot detection, which alerts cyclists whenever a vehicle enters a potentially dangerous position. Together, these technologies are designed to improve situational awareness and reduce the risk of accidents in busy urban environments.

LED lighting improves visibility for everyone
Volkswagen has also focused on making riders more visible to others on the road.
The eBike features integrated LED lighting along the top tube, while the rear includes an illuminated VW-logo brake light. On the Crossover version, rear-mounted turn signals are integrated into the cargo rack, helping communicate the rider’s intentions more clearly to nearby drivers and cyclists.
According to Volkswagen, the lighting system remains highly visible even in daylight, adding another layer of protection during everyday commuting.
A smart helmet inspired by fighter pilots
Perhaps the most futuristic feature is Volkswagen’s optional smart helmet, which synchronizes with the bike’s lighting system.
Whenever the rider brakes or signals a turn, LEDs built into the helmet mirror the corresponding lights on the bicycle, making movements even more noticeable from every angle.
The helmet also includes an integrated accelerometer capable of detecting a crash. If an accident occurs, it can automatically notify pre-selected emergency contacts via text message, providing an additional level of security for riders.
Smart glasses create a heads-up display
Volkswagen goes one step further by offering optional smart HUD glasses that work seamlessly with the helmet and the bicycle.
The glasses project key riding information directly into the rider’s field of vision, including speed, battery range, navigation guidance, and safety warnings. If the rear radar detects an approaching vehicle, alerts appear simultaneously on both the glasses and the bike’s central display.
The result is an experience similar to a fighter pilot’s heads-up display, allowing cyclists to stay informed without taking their eyes off the road.
Premium safety comes at a premium price
Volkswagen offers both the Sport and Crossover versions of the eBike starting at $4,349, with the Smart View rear camera currently included at no extra cost.
The optional smart helmet is priced at $399, while the HUD smart glasses cost an additional $499. Riders choosing the Crossover model can also purchase a range extender battery for $749, providing extra distance for longer trips.
Although the complete package represents a significant investment, Volkswagen is clearly betting that advanced cycling safety technology, intelligent connectivity, and premium engineering will appeal to riders looking for one of the most technologically advanced electric bikes currently available.
