Jeep is revisiting one of the most important chapters in its history with the new Wrangler JL-2A 2027, a model that pays tribute to the Willys CJ-2A of 1945, the first Jeep developed specifically for civilian use. The vehicle is the 11th launch in Jeep’s Dozen 4 Dozen series.
More than 80 years after the CJ-2A brought the off-road capabilities of military vehicles to farms, ranches and industrial operations, Jeep is returning to its roots with a modern interpretation of the original model. The result combines design elements inspired by the 1945 Jeep with the technology and off-road capabilities of today’s Wrangler.
For those following the evolution of off-road vehicles, the JL-2A also demonstrates how automakers are drawing on historic designs to create special editions with a strong connection to their heritage.
From the Willys MB to the Jeep CJ-2A
The story began in July 1945, when Willys transformed the well-known Willys MB military vehicle into the CJ-2A, a vehicle designed from the outset for civilian use.
Built in Toledo, Ohio, the model brought much of the ruggedness developed during World War II into a new civilian setting. Farmers, ranchers and industrial workers found the CJ-2A to be a practical and durable vehicle.
Its features included a tailgate, power take-off and larger headlights. It also played an important role in establishing the seven-slot grille that would eventually become one of Jeep’s most recognizable design signatures.
The CJ-2A also stood out for its distinctive colors. Combinations such as Harvest Tan with Sunset Red wheels and Pasture Green with Autumn Yellow wheels helped give the model its personality and now serve as inspiration for the new JL-2A.
Retro Design Meets Modern Capability
The Jeep Wrangler JL-2A 2027 brings back several of those historic elements while adapting them to the proportions and design language of a modern Wrangler.
The exterior color palette includes Gobi for the two-door version and ’41 for the four-door model, along with Bright White, Sting Grey, Ghost and Joose. The latter takes center stage on the 17-inch retro-style wheels, which visually echo the Sunset Red wheels used on the original CJ-2A.
The wheels are paired with 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 tires, reinforcing the model’s off-road character and giving the Wrangler JL-2A a more purposeful stance.
Body-color fenders and a three-piece hardtop create a cohesive exterior appearance. Orange tow hooks and Dark Metallic Grey accents on the grille add contrast while combining the classic Jeep look with a more contemporary design.
An Interior Inspired by the Willys Heritage
The connection with the past continues inside the cabin. Jeep has developed a distinctive combination of colors and materials for the Wrangler JL-2A that recalls the character of its earliest civilian models.
The seats feature Heritage Tan Nappa leather, while the dashboard incorporates Nappa PUR inserts. The door panels, center console and lower dashboard use Bison Brown to create a warm, distinctive interior.
Desert Orange stitching completes the color scheme and provides a visual connection with the Joose finish used on the exterior wheels.
Several details are directly inspired by Willys-Overland. They include a satin chrome shift knob medallion, air-vent graphics featuring the seven-slot grille and Willys silhouette, and an exclusive plaque mounted on the rear tailgate.
The plaque recreates the style of the data plates used on the original CJ-2A and references the agricultural and industrial applications that defined the early civilian Jeep.
Equipment Designed for Off-Road Driving
The historic styling does not mean the JL-2A lacks modern equipment. The model comes standard with the Convenience Group, which includes remote start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a universal garage-door opener.
One of the most useful features for drivers who take the Wrangler off pavement is the TrailCam front-facing camera with integrated washer. The system improves visibility of the terrain immediately ahead of the vehicle, particularly when tackling obstacles or uneven surfaces on off-road trails.
The CJ-2A Legacy Lives On in the Wrangler
The Jeep Wrangler JL-2A 2027 is more than a retro-inspired special edition. Its design establishes a direct connection between the 1945 CJ-2A and today’s Wrangler, two vehicles separated by more than eight decades but united by the same philosophy of capability and adventure.
The CJ-2A helped establish Jeep as a brand associated with ruggedness and off-road capability for civilian customers. The new JL-2A takes several of its most recognizable visual elements and combines them with the performance, equipment and technology of a modern Wrangler.
