2027 BMW iX3 Impresses in Real-World Test With 15-Minute Charge

The 2027 BMW iX3 continues to prove that BMW’s new generation of electric vehicles is built for long-distance travel. A recent real-world highway test showed that the electric SUV delivers an impressive combination of driving range, energy efficiency, and ultra-fast charging, reinforcing its position as one of the most promising EVs in its class.

For drivers following the latest EV developments or exploring different models, marketplaces dedicated to used and new cars for sale offer an easy way to compare available vehicles and market options.

A Real-World Road Trip Challenge

The YouTube channel Out of Spec Roaming put the BMW iX3 xDrive50 through its so-called “10% Challenge,” a test designed to simulate a typical highway road trip.

The vehicle was connected to a DC fast charger with the battery at 10% state of charge. After just 15 minutes of charging, the SUV headed onto the highway, maintaining a constant speed of 120 km/h (74 mph) until the battery returned to 10%.

Nearly 240 Kilometers From a Short Charging Stop

During the test, the BMW iX3 covered 238 kilometers (148 miles) before reaching 10% battery again. It recorded an average efficiency of 2.56 miles per kWh, equivalent to 38.9 kWh per 100 miles.

While these figures are already impressive, the test also demonstrated that spending just a few more minutes at the charger would significantly extend the distance between charging stops.

Equipped with a 108 kWh usable battery, BMW estimates that charging from 10% to 80% takes only 21 minutes, providing approximately 327 kilometers (203 miles) of real-world highway range.

Ultra-Fast Charging Sets the iX3 Apart

One of the standout aspects of the new iX3 was its exceptional charging performance.

The SUV reached a peak charging rate of 407 kW and maintained more than 400 kW until roughly 20% state of charge. Charging power then gradually decreased:

  • 360 kW at 30% battery.
  • 250 kW at 40% battery.
  • 200 kW at 50% battery.

After just 15 minutes, the battery had increased from 10% to 65%, with an average charging power of 257 kW, placing the iX3 among the fastest-charging electric SUVs currently available.

Built for Long-Distance Driving

BMW estimates that a full battery can deliver approximately 468 kilometers (291 miles) of highway driving. Although this falls short of the EPA’s combined estimated range of 434 miles, it represents a highly competitive real-world result at sustained highway speeds.

The BMW iX3 is the first production model built on BMW’s new Neue Klasse platform, developed specifically for electric vehicles with major improvements in efficiency, technology, and charging capability.

Following a successful launch in Europe, BMW has already opened pre-orders in the United States, with the first customer deliveries expected by the end of September.

Based on these early results, the 2027 BMW iX3 is shaping up to be one of the most compelling electric SUVs for drivers seeking long-range capability with minimal charging stops—an increasingly important factor as EV adoption continues to grow.
