Mercedes-Benz is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the all-new 2028 Mercedes-Benz GLA, a compact luxury SUV that will be available in both fully electric and hybrid versions. Scheduled to arrive in the U.S. during the second half of next year, the redesigned GLA promises improved range, faster charging, advanced technology, and a more refined interior.

Mercedes Accelerates Its Electric Vehicle Strategy
Mercedes-Benz is entering a new phase of its EV strategy after the limited commercial success of its previous EQ lineup. The company is introducing an entirely new generation of software-defined electric vehicles designed to compete more effectively against rivals such as Tesla, BMW, and other premium EV manufacturers.
Following the unveiling of the new electric CLA, C-Class, and GLC models, the redesigned GLA becomes the latest addition to Mercedes’ growing portfolio of next-generation electric vehicles.
Two Electric Powertrains with Impressive Performance
The electric GLA will be offered in two configurations:
- Mercedes-Benz GLA 250+ Electric, powered by a single electric motor producing 268 horsepower.
- Mercedes-Benz GLA 350 4Matic Electric, featuring dual electric motors, all-wheel drive, and a combined output of 349 horsepower.
Mercedes says the GLA 350 4Matic can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, placing it among the quickest compact electric SUVs in its class.
Both versions are equipped with an 85 kWh usable nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, delivering up to 408 miles (WLTP) of driving range. While the official EPA rating has not yet been announced, the vehicle is expected to achieve well over 350 miles on a single charge.
Ultra-Fast Charging with an 800-Volt Architecture
The new GLA features an advanced 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing DC fast charging at speeds of up to 320 kW. According to Mercedes, drivers can add approximately 168 miles of range in just 10 minutes under optimal charging conditions.
The SUV also supports charging at 400-volt stations thanks to an integrated DC converter, making it compatible with a broader range of charging infrastructure.
A Hybrid Option for Greater Flexibility
For buyers who are not ready to switch to a fully electric vehicle, Mercedes will also offer a hybrid version powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a compact electric motor integrated into an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The 48-volt mild-hybrid system includes a 1.3 kWh battery pack, allowing the GLA to operate on electric power alone during low-speed driving and while coasting, improving overall fuel efficiency.
Advanced Technology Inside and Out
The redesigned GLA introduces several innovative technologies. One of the highlights is the new Terrain Mode, which includes a Transparent Hood feature that uses exterior cameras to create a virtual view beneath the front of the vehicle, making off-road driving and obstacle navigation easier.
The SUV also debuts the latest MBUX Virtual Assistant, powered by ChatGPT and Google Cloud Automotive AI. The assistant is capable of understanding natural conversations, remembering recent interactions, and providing more intelligent navigation guidance.
Comprehensive Driver Assistance Systems
Safety remains a major priority. Every GLA comes equipped with eight cameras, five radar sensors, and twelve ultrasonic sensors, working together with Mercedes’ Distance Assist Distronic system.
Vehicles equipped with the optional MB.Drive Assist Plus package also gain advanced traffic light recognition and enhanced urban driving assistance in supported markets.
A Premium Design Inside and Out
The exterior design closely follows Mercedes’ latest electric styling language, featuring a bold front grille, slim LED headlights, aerodynamic bodywork, and a full-width rear light bar.
Inside, the cabin offers the brand’s signature digital dashboard with multiple high-resolution displays, customizable ambient lighting, premium materials, and a minimalist layout with very few physical buttons.
The floating center console and upscale finishes give the GLA a more luxurious feel than many competitors in the compact electric SUV segment.
A Strong New Competitor in the Premium EV Market
If Mercedes can keep pricing competitive and the official EPA range approaches the impressive WLTP figures, the 2028 Mercedes-Benz GLA could become one of the most compelling premium compact electric SUVs on the market.
